Thatch Roofing Prekmurje is the cradle of traditional thatched roof construction. Listed as a Slovenian cultural heritage, thatched roofs date back to the middle of the 17th century, when their use was most widespread.

Due to modest living condition thatched roofing used to be the most common roofing material in Prekmurje, giving the area its characteristic look. However, today the knowledge of this building method is slowly being forgotten.

Despite the increasing popularity of natural construction, the knowledge of the traditional construction process is not passed on to younger generations of craftsmen, as such construction is a bit more expensive and it needs different maintenance in the life cycle. Few masters, acknowledged with the technique are getting old and there is a danger that such techniques will die out completely.

Our interest in natural materials and traditional construction methods, from the perspective of nature conservation and a healthy living environment, has driven us to prepare a project – a workshop and research on the use of straw as a building material.

V Prekmurju je bilo kritje objektov s slamo zaradi skromnosti bivanjskih razmer dolgo najbolj razširjen način prekrivanja streh in daje območju značilno podobo.

Zanimanje za naravne materiale in tradicionalne načine gradnje, z vidika varovanja narave in zdravega življenjskega okolja so nas vzpodbudili k pripravi projekta – delavnice in raziskave o uporabi materiala – odpadka –  slame.

Projekt v nastajanju – Domačija Lucova – M.O. + N.V.I

Workshop The workshop took place at an old farmstead where renovations are currently being planned. The main building for social gathering – the barn – will be covered with straw.

We want to make methods available to the widest range of people. Rooted in tradition, such techniques provide a sustainable and ecological path for the future development of architecture.

As we want to support the preservation and development of Prekmurje’s architectural heritage, it is not enough to simply renovate buildings using traditional building methods. We need to use the opportunity to encourage and educate people on using the technique.

Through this project and its international networking, cooperation between the local and global communities is being developed.

The use of traditional roofing techniques is not simply a part of a cultural heritage positioned in the concrete space, time and history of a neglected region in Slovenia. It is a modern construction technique that does not burden the environment and simultaneously encourages the integrity of the local community.

The Master Anton Golnar from Sveti Juri ob Ščavnici is a building-master who will lead the practical workshop, presenting the techniques and uses of straw as a building material.

Janez Golnar (the son of the master) is one of the few registered carriers of the heritage of straw roof-thatching in Slovenia who is still actively engaged in the practice. His father Anton acquired this knowhow through a course in Sovjak organized by the People’s University of Gornja Radgona. The course was led by the well-known master of thatching, Lovrenc Kramberger. He consolidated the theoretical knowledge he acquired on the course by occasionally repairing old thatched roofs. Interest in his work increased, the volume of work increased, so he soon expanded his craft and connected with the Institutes for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Maribor, Celje and Novo Mesto, with whom he regularly cooperates.

The Publication Straw is a natural material that has also been used for covering buildings for centuries. Today, its use has been replaced by industrial materials, every day we are more aware of the importance of building from natural, durable materials and the necessity of preserving knowledge about traditional approaches to construction.
